Ballet Dancer Michaela DE Prince Dead at 29, Family Confirms in Statement | Pro Hub of News
Michaela DePrince, a principal soloist at the Boston Ballet, has sadly passed away at just 29 years old.
Michaela was born in Sierra Leone in 1995, where she lost her parents during the civil war. She was adopted by an American family at the age of four. While in an orphanage, she found a magazine with a picture of a ballerina, which inspired her to pursue a career in dance.
On Friday (September 13), Michaela’s family confirmed her passing, but the cause of her death has not been shared yet.
Michaela’s team said, “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the loss of Michaela Mabinty DePrince. Her talent and passion touched many lives, and her story inspired countless people. She overcame great challenges and used her platform to uplift others. Even though her time with us was short, her legacy will continue to inspire future generations.”
Michaela’s family also shared their grief, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of our beloved sister, Michaela Mabinty DePrince. She made a big impact on the world, especially in encouraging young Black dancers to follow their dreams. We will miss her beautiful smile and presence.”
Michaela leaves behind her sisters Mia, Beelee, Jaye, Mariel, Amie, and her brothers Adam and Erik.
Her sister Mia shared, “I’m heartbroken. Michaela (Mabinty) was not only my sister but my inspiration. From our days in the orphanage, we used to make up our own plays and ballets. After we were adopted, our parents supported her dream of becoming a ballerina. Michaela worked hard and made her mark in the dance world and beyond. She will be greatly missed.”
In memory of Michaela, her family is asking for donations to War Child, an organization she cared about deeply, instead of sending flowers.
